Abstract
The article dwells on some research projects carried out in China to define more precisely the chronology of ancient dynasties, names of which in Western world are used to be associated with the "mythological" period of Chinese history. The author reconstructed the evolution of senses of the character xia, which is semantically connected with agriculture and calendar.
