In the paper the technique is suggested of transforming the information about occupational standing of an individual which is found in the all-Union censuses into information about his belonging to a certain social layer. The technique includes the studying of interrelation between «social class — social layer-occupations. The criterion of differentiation into tlie layers is the differences in the character of labour.

The result of the conducted research was building up of the standardized sociological classification of occupations which meets the requirements of comparability with the system of occupations grouping used by the state statistics of population employment. The authors showed the possibilities of using this technique on the materials of censuses 1959 and 1970.
