- Abstract
- The article, based on Chinese and Russian sources, tells about the stay in St. Petersburg of the Chinese diplomatic mission headed by Anson Burlingham, Zhi Gan and Sun Jiagu. Unknown details of this visit are given, showing that the Russian government received the Chinese delegation at the highest level, in compliance with the basic rules and norms of diplomatic etiquette of the time. It is noted that it was in St. Petersburg, due to the death of the head of the embassy of the American diplomat Burlingham, that the real head of the mission was changed. This first official embassy of the Qing Empire to the countries of the West was a significant milestone in the development of relations between Russia and China and contributed to their transition to a qualitatively new level, opening the way for the establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission of China in Russia.
