- Abstract
- Shanghai is the largest city in China. The high level of its economic development entails fairly complex environmental problems, the importance of which is enhanced because of organizing the International Exhibition "Expo-2010". Estimates of the environmental situation in Shanghai are ambiguous. The main difficulties are related to the state of air quality, water resources and the progressive accumulation of solid waste. Atmospheric carbon dioxide pollution in Shanhai breaks the record not only for China. Serious problems exist in the fields of water resources and urban water supply. Nevertheless, Shanghai is well positioned to become an engine of China's environmental policies.
