Abstract
The article examines the main episodes of the formation of Russian-Japanese relations through the "northern window" Japan - the city of Hakodate. The first of them was the visit of a Russian galleon to this city 'In 1722, a new milestone in the development of bilateral contacts was the signing of the Russian-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1855 and the Treaty of 1858 on trade and navigation, establishing official diplomatic relations between the two countries, describes the activities of the first Russian consulate opened in accordance with this treaty in 1858, headed by I. A. Goshkevich in Moscow. Hakodate. The main result of his activity was the construction of the buildings of the consulate, the naval hospital and the Russian Orthodox Church. The paper analyzes the Russian-Japanese trade at that time, and provides examples of business activities of citizens of the two countries.
