Abstract

Joseph S. Nye, Jr, the author of both “soft power” and “smart power” conceptions, defined it as an ability to achieve country’s goals in the world politics via promoting its democratic values, freedom of speech, its political culture and an attractive international image. The “soft power” approach was successful enough at the turn of the 20th century, but George W. Bush’s militant foreign policy and two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan considerably damaged the U.S. image and the world attitude. In spite of Barack Obama’s efforts to improve the situation, recently, while Donald J. Trump’s presidency, the country has continued to lose its positions in the rating of the "soft power", and the author analyzes the reasons of it.
