Abstract

The article analyzes the assessments of Peter Efimovich Shelest in modern Ukrainian historiography, assessments, the main directions in the study of his activities as the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine (1963‒1972), the reasons for his resignation. The attitude of modern Ukrainian historians to the discussions that have been going on since the 1970s is studied: whether or not Shelest can be considered a «national communist», a representative of «Ukrainian autonomy». Most experts in Modern Ukraine are not inclined to consider Shelest an orthodox national communist, but they emphasize the «autonomy» of Shelest's actions and his disagreement with some of the policies of the allied authorities. Ukrainian literature notes that Shelest took the federal structure of the USSR seriously and defended the national interests and rights of the Ukrainian SSR. At the same time, it is emphasized that Shelest often behaved independently, but he was a staunch supporter of the line of the center, he was a firm and unshakable champion of the socialist choice. It is also argued that in modern Ukrainian historiography the dominant opinion is that Shelest's activities are ambivalent, that the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine constantly maneuvers between centralizing and anti-centralizing discourses.
