Abstract
The article draws attention to the importance of studying ethnically mixed settlements as a social milieu where the processes of ethnic and cultural interaction are most intense; it further discusses the organization of expedition field research in such settlements in Volga - Ural region, its targets and goals, its realization, and the outcome.
