Abstract

The article makes the first attempt in historiography to describe the participation of Ural Cossacks in World’s Columbian Exposition held in 1893 in Chicago. In the first part the authors present the analysis of the US economic development of the period stemming from major research by Russian and Soviet academics. Special emphasis is laid on the history of US-Russia economic and business ties. It is supported by the contemporaries’ evaluation of the quality of Russian goods that were supplied to the US market. The article provides a more detailed overview of the following topics: the participation of Ural Cossacks in the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair (including the history and the level of participation and the issues involved in delivering exhibits to the fair); Ural Cossacks’ fishing experience (with the focus on the peculiarities of Ural Cossack formation hierarchy, their customs and procedures of fishery in the Ural river, the list of commercially important fish types, the impact of economic activity on the military practices of Ural Cossacks);the biography of N.A. Borodin, specialist in American studies and the person responsible for the Cossack pavilion at the Fair (including his background, the purposes and geography of his trips to the USA and Canada, the major theoretical and practical outcomes of his research, his further academic career in the USA).
