Abstract

This article is a review of more than a dozen of studies which set out what could be at stake if NAFTA agreement were to terminate. These studies were conducted in 2017-2018 in the USA, Canada, and some major European countries as a response to the rising American protectionism and President Trump’s stated intention to withdraw the USA from NAFTA. There is an important historic arc here, which shed light on what is at play in terms of NAFTA’s importance for the United States, Canada and Mexico. This literature review has two primary purposes. First, it seeks to draw out the emerging consensus between economists on the trade and economic impact of possible NAFTA break-down on the USA, Canada and Mexico. Such knowledge is instrumental in providing a more thorough understanding of economic integration in North America and elsewhere. Second, the review provides a motivating background for comparison with ongoing economic disin-tegration in other parts of the world, starting with Brexit.
