Abstract
The article dwells upon the so-called “comfort women” issue in Japan-South Korean relations. It presents a brief review of the history of the problem since the early 90s and describes the process of formation of Tokyo’s and Seoul’s stances on the issue. The article mentions Japan’s steps to resolve the problem, including publishing the statement by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono and establishing Asian Women’s Fund (1995-2007). The author points out the role of South Korean non-governmental organizations in emergence of the “comfort women” issue in bilateral Japan-South Korean relations, analyses Seoul’s policy of internationalization of the problem, and describes the correspondent position of the UN human rights bodies. The author focuses on the “comfort women” issue under Shinzo Abe and Park Geun-hye administrations and speculates on its impact on the bilateral Japan-South Korean relations.
