Abstract
The article is devoted to the political dimension of activity of Russian consulates in Mongolia in 1861-1917 and their role in implementation of Russia's "Far Eastern strategy". The imperial consular institute made a considerable contribution to resolving the "Mongol problem", playing a role of an effective mechanism for Russia's international mediation during Mongolia's struggle for the autonomy, as well as to solution of the "Kobdo" and "Altai" problems of the early XXth century. The author is analyzing the consulates' efforts to strengthen Russia's position in Mongolia and preserve the "balance of power" in the regional international competition of this period.
