- Abstract
Based on the analysis of the polemical writings of German authors of the late 18th century, unknown in Russian historiography, the article considers the German discussion that took place in 1790—1793, which was caused by the claims of Catherine II to the role of guarantor of the imperial constitution. This discussion was one of the first attempts by the German society to recognize Russia’s place in the European system of states.
